My first year teaching was a HOT MESS!! I wish I had someone that I could get advice from and ask all my questions to. I pretty much just figured it out on my own. My first job was in the middle of the school year and I worked with all older people. I would ask questions and they were super nice, but I wanted someone to relate and understand the struggle. My passion is helping new teachers THRIVE in the classroom. My dream job would be training future teachers or working with first year teachers to create meaningful lessons and develop classroom management skills. BUT that’s another blog post. This post is going to be my secrets to rocking an interview and scoring the job of your dreams for all my peeps on the job hunt!
First thing that I highly recommend is creating a Teacher Portfolio. This is a binder that you’re going to fill with all the reasons why this school should hire you! If you haven’t taught in the classroom yet or haven’t created lessons, use what you’ve created in your college classes and field experiences.
I used my silhouette cameo to create a label for the front. (Duh!)
A Look Inside:
I used clear page protectors for all papers that I put into this binder. For the tabs-I cut out the circles, laminated them, and then taped them to the clear page protector.
First thing you want in this binder is your professional resume. For privacy reasons, I’m not going to share a picture of mine, but I will break down the sections on my resume.
- Name + Address + email + Phone Number at the top
- Education and Certifications (College ed + Any certifications)
- Professional Objective (A statement that shares your goals and why you want this teaching position.)
- Teaching Experience (I have my most recent at the top and go down from there. I included my tutoring, substituting experience, and student teaching experience.)
- Skills Practiced (Creating curriculum, coaching, organizing events, maintained discipline in the classroom, etc.)
- Honors and Awards (Donor’s Choose projects funded, Teacher of the month, ANYTHING that will make you look like a STAR!)
I would recommend putting multiple copies of this resume in your binder pocket along with the one in your page protector.
A copy of your teaching certificate.
This is something that I added so that whoever is considering me can know my view on teaching, my style of teaching, and my mission as a teacher. This is solely my views on education. I suggest creating a statement that is true to you and represents you as an educator. It can be a page of quotes, a mission statement, or even a description of your style. Project based learning teacher? Awesome! Add that and a description. Do you believe that learning is 95% what we teach others? Perfect. ADD IT!
THE CROWD PLEASER…
This is what really wows them. I add examples of projects I have created, curriculum guides, mind maps, formative assessment probes, anything that shows them what goes down in my classroom…
Next up- Personal References…
I list 5 people that can vouch for my integrity, my work ethic, my professionalism, and KNOW how I teach. These are not my friends who will lie for me and make me sound awesome. It’s 5 people that truly know me as an educator. I listed their name, place of work, phone number, and email.
The last section is our state evaluations. I added in a few evaluations with comments from my evaluating principal so they can see what she had to say about my performance and the score that she gave me. If you have not taught before I would add some comments or evaluations from some field experiences in the classroom if you have them, if not, leave this section out.
In the back I added a Take Winston Home Application, because I would talk about Winston in my interview (since we’re a package deal!) This could possibly give me an opportunity to explain how having a class pet is a positive, learning experience in my classroom.
I debated on adding a professional development section and also breaking down the examples into two sections (science examples and example projects) BUT I didn’t want this binder to be overwhelming. If you had a FULL 2 inch binder and sat it down in front of the principal in your interview, they may be a little confused or overwhelmed. In the words of my middle schoolers, you don’t want to be a “try-hard!” Add just enough to give them a visual representation of you as a teacher!
+ALSO+ I always bring my interactive science notebook. This has been really popular in the interviews that I have done. It seems to really impress the people that I have interviewed with and gives them a good representation of how I structure my class.
My Extra Interview Tips:
- Wear something that’s YOU, but NOT distracting. I like to keep it neutral and simple. I tend to gravitate towards pants, but when I graduated from college and went on my interviews I wore a pencil skirt, tights, heels, top, and a blazer. (Winter interviews!) If you’re interviewing in the summer- a cute summer dress with a blazer or cardigan would be cute!
- BE unapologetically you. You want to work somewhere that wants YOU for who you truly are. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Be professional of course, but don’t be afraid to show them your personality.
- Don’t feel rushed to answer questions. Take your time and really think about what they’re asking.
- BE CONFIDENT! You are amazing and have so much to offer! Don’t get discouraged and try not to think negative no matter what ends of happening!
